Interesting news before the weekend: Nizhny Novgorod scientists have developed an antimicrobial film for food products.
The modified organic zinc salt in the composition prevents microbes from penetrating the food. This film extends the shelf life of products by 2 to 2.5 times. In addition, it is biodegradable: due to the starch and sucrose in its composition, it decomposes in the soil within 50-70 years. Thanks to the simple synthesis and accessible ingredients, the material can be produced using standard equipment for polyethylene film production.
The innovative food film was developed by chemists at Lobachevsky University. This is the first antimicrobial packaging for the food industry; previously, such technology was only used in construction and medicine.
